IUPUI Equestrian Team: Q & A

HPF is proud to be the home of the Indiana University/Purdue University Indianapolis Intercollegiate Equestrian Team, coached by HPF Head Trainer/Owner Robin Lawrence.

Q:  What’s the team about?

A: The team competes in the hunt-seat discipline on the flat and over fences against other Zone 7/Region 1 teams who are members of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA), including Purdue, IU, Taylor, Marion, St. Mary of the Woods, Valparaiso, Butler, University of Illinois, and Notre Dame.

Riders—rather than the horses–are judged–on their equitation, or correct form and effectiveness in the saddle. Top-scoring riders may have the opportunity to represent IUPUI in year-end regional, zone, and national finals.

Q:  Can I join? I don’t have much riding experience.

A: Riders of all skill levels (including alumni) are encouraged to participate in one of eight competition divisions ranging from Beginner to Medal/Maclay (division to be determined by team coach). And you don’t have to own a horse to participate—because no one rides their own horse! In fact, at IHSA shows, riders randomly draw their mounts’ names from a hat just before their class to ensure that no one has a preplanned advantage.

Q:  When are shows held?

A: During the regular competition season (September through March), shows are held over a weekend several times each month. We know you’re crazy busy, so you choose which shows to ride in—you’re not expected to do them all (but it does help). The more you show, the more points you and IUPUI Equestrian accumulate toward year-end awards.

Q:  How much does it cost?

A: Annual IHJA membership is $ 40. Riders are responsible for their own team membership, show entry, and weekly lesson fees; travel expenses; and show attire. Tack is provided by your team and the host school.

Q:  Where and when does the team train?

A: The team trains at Hunters Pointe Farm in Westfield/Cicero. Riders are required to take one group lesson with Robin each week during the show season at their own expense (schedule TBD). To reduce driving expenses, you may wish to carpool with other team members.

Q:  Where can I get more information?

A:  Call/text Coach Robin Lawrence at 317-490-2464. Or visit the IHSA website at www.ihsainc.com.
